The IAI was the first scientific institution that promoted research networks throughout the continent, rigorously applied criteria of scientific excellence to its funded activities, and at the same time demanded interdisciplinary and international collaboration of all its researchers. The IAI has adopted a very broad science agenda around the themes of global change and has been promoting many different projects under this broad umbrella. To achieve these goals, the IAI’s science program was initiated with start-up grants that allowed groups of researchers to come together, develop networks and research proposals, and advance to research collaborations funded by targeted small grants. Since the year 2000, the IAI has implemented 3 series of Collaborative Research Networks. Each of these CRNs involves at least 4 countries in the Americas, brings together several disciplines, and lasts for 5 years. There are currently ten active CRNs, while Small Grants continue to play a role in developing highly targeted research opportunities.
