Conference “Science and policy in urban response to climate change” – 30 October 2012
The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) are preparing a publication on the urban responses to climate change. The goal is to develop practical and useful guidelines to support the decision-making process by presenting adaptation and mitigation experiences from several Latin American municipalities and cities, analyzed from a theoretical perspective and simple language, to facilitate its use by decision-makers.
The initiative is a result of the needs identified during the Training Institute on “Urban responses to climate change: politics, strategies, and instruments for Latin America and the Caribbean” (1-6 November 2010, Santiago de Chile) and a recommendation by the participating group of experts. Consequently, several of the scientists and practitioners from the Training Institute will participate in the preparation of this publication.
The editorial forum and the publication are funded by the IAI with resources provided by the US National Science Foundation (NSF).

The goal of the publication
This publication is aimed at providing a useful reference to decision-makers, urban planners and a wide range of stakeholders participating in the development of urban areas and everyday life in cities. The document has two main objectives. First, to help urban stakeholders be aware of the importance to urban areas of climate variability and change. This is based on the two-way interactions between climate and urban areas: what are the effects of urban areas on the climate and how climate impacts on urban areas. The second objective is to help different stakeholders to identify how their every-day work towards urban growth can include responses to climate change and variability (mitigation, reducing vulnerability, and adaptation). Both objectives are closely related among each other, and we consider this publication can contribute to improving responses to climate change and variability in a significant number of urban areas.
We aim at a publication underpinned by the best scientific knowledge currently available on the interactions among urban areas, climate change, and climate variability. In addition, the document needs to be easy to read by users, accessible in terms of distribution and size, and present practical examples to help illustrate the important messages under each subject.

30 October 2012 (14:00 – 18:00), Buenos Aires, Argentina
Taking advantage of the presence in Buenos Aires of the experts attending the editorial forum, a conference will be organized with scientists and decision makers to address the urban responses to climate change. The event is aimed at sharing with the local community the work of the IAI in this area and in promoting informed discussion. Invitees will include scientists, academics, municipality decsion makers, environmental authorities and non governmental organizations.
