Manual of Methods: Human, Ecological and Biophysical Dimensions of Tropical Dry Forests - developed by the IAI Collaborative Research Network for the study of Tropical Dry Forests in the Americas, Editors: Jafet M. Nassar, Jon Paul Rodríguez, Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa, Theresa Garvin, Mauricio Quesada.
This book was developed as a manual of methods designed specifically for tropical dry forests with emphasis on the topics included in the IAI project, but it has wide application potential, as the global change questions addressed with these methods are similar to other terrestrial ecosystems. The book describes a wide range of methods: ecological (ecosystem structure, soil microbiology, phenology, biotic interactions), remote sensing (spatial information, image processing), and social science (human-ecosystems relationships, socio-economic indicators, and environmental policy). Emphasis is on the dynamics of the systems investigated, so that the analyses provide a picture of the processes of deterioration and/or recovery of heavily disturbed systems.

Atlas of the Patagonian Sea
The Patagonian Sea is a highly productive oceanic ecosystem in the South-Western Atlantic which is plentiful in species of high aesthetic, ecological and economic value. This Atlas summarizes research on how 16 species of top predators make use of the Patagonian Sea ecosystem. Among them are such charismatic species as albatrosses, petrels, penguins, sea lions and elephant seals. They are all top predators of the Patagonian Sea and require a lot of space and resources. This makes them vulnerable to human activities; hence, they are good indicators of the status of conservation of the Sea.

Atlas web page: www.atlas-marpatagonico.org

The site makes it possible to build comparative series of up to six maps, showing species distributions and oceanographic variables. The web Atlas allows identifying areas that are relevant to biodiversity at an ecosystem scale, for the design of ocean protected areas, the bio-regionalization of the sea and the conservation of species. It will be updated with relevant information, and aims at becoming a useful tool to promote conservation action.

Applying Ecological Knowledge to Landuse Decisions
This book synthesizes the knowledge and experience of several of the IAI's collaborative research networks on terrestrial ecosystems, forests, grasslands, agriculture and river margins, and explores how this may be used to guide decisions on landuse.

Urbanization, Global Environmental Change, and Sustainable Development in Latin America
The present and future of Latin America is intrinsically associated with the development of its urban areas.Over 75% of the continent's population resides in cities. Urban areas represent a dynamic link between Latin American societies and global, social, economic, political, and environmental processes. This book looks at interactions between global environmental change and urbanization at local, regional, and global scales, under a comprehensive, integrated perspective. It emphasizes global change both as a driver and an outcome of human (economic, political, cultural, and social) and physical (urban structure, expansion, and land use) processes in urban areas.

Communicating Global Change Science to Society: An Assessment and Case Studies (not for download)
Governments and scientists may be equally concerned with global environmental change, but their interests - and their timelines - are not the same. While governments tend to focus on short-term effects and local impacts of global phenomena, scientists are reluctant to engage in speculation about the specific consequences of large-scale environmental trends. How can we communicate science and translate understanding of these trends into public policy? This book examines the growing number of instances in which governments and scientists have engaged in research projects in which the goal is to inform policy decisions. It assesses these experiences and discusses implications for future collaborations.
