The Directorate is the institute's primary administrative organ and is composed of a Director, Assistant Director: Science Programs, Assistant Director: Finance and Administration, Assistant Director: Capacity Building, Manager: Information Technology, Manager: Science Programs and support staff . The IAI Directorate is located on the campus of Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.
The Director's primary responsibilities are: Promote and represent the Institute within the region and the rest of the world; Develop proposals for the Institute's long-range plan, financial policies, and annual program and budget; and Implement and monitor the financial policies, annual program, and budget approved by the Conference of the Parties.
