Launch of the project "Design and initial implementation of a drought information system (monitoring, prediction, preparation and mitigation of impacts) for southern South America - SISA"

Droughts have considerable social, economic and environmental impacts in southern South America, specially on agriculture and livestock production. Besides, climatic change will increase the drought risk on southern region of South America.

The BID has approved a Technical Cooperation: "Design and initial implementation of a drought information system (monitoring, prediction, preparation and mitigation of impacts) for southern South America - SISA", The aim of the TC is to build a drought information system for the South of South America (SAS in spanish) with two main objectives: (1) to contribute to the reduction of the economic, social and environmental impacts that droughts have on agricultural production and hydroelectric generation in SAS, and (2) to improve the governance of risk management associated with droughts, contributing to the collective development of national policies  (see: https://www.iadb.org/en/project/RG-T3308 for more information on the project). The leading entity is the National Meteorological Service of the Argentine Republic (SMN), representing the Regional Climate Centre for southern South America (CRC-SAS), composed by several institutions including meterorological services, policy and research institutions on agriculture/livestock and organizations for risk management in Argentina Bolivia, Brazil Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The IAI is participating in the launch event of the project, to be held in Asunción, Paraguay, 24-26 April, 2019 Agenda
