Open Data/Open Science

Open Data Policy

The open data/open science work of the IAI is based on the Open Data Policy and Principles adopted at the 26th Conference of the Parties held in Guatemala in 2018 (Decision XXVI/45) and the following:

Article II of the Agreement establishing the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research states, in part:
The Institute shall pursue the principles of scientific excellence, international cooperation, and the full and open exchange of scientific information, r

elevant to global change.

Decision XXV/6 on Open data policy and principles

The Conference of the

  •  Parties (CoP), at its 25th meeting (Bogota, 2017) adopted Decision XXV/6 on Open data policy and principles, which states:
    The CoP

  • directed the IAI Directorate to define and establish open data policy and principles taking into account the data policy document approved at IAI CoP 2. The document will be presented at the next CoP.

The Open Data Policy states that the IAI shall pursue the principles of scientific excellence, international cooperation, and the full and open exchange of scientific information relevant to global change. The policy aims to advance scientific data re-use, sharing and participation by allowing stakeholders to access IAI-funded data freely and without restrictions.

Data Management

Research data needs stewardship during and after the end of the project. Because of this, considering different aspects of data management can save time and efforts later in the project. For this end, one of the tools researchers have is a data management plan (DMP). The IAI DMP helps you answer questions related to samples, data processing, privacy and archiving, among other things. The IAI requires a DMP in certain programs (see program instructions for details).

Open Data Catalog

Information and results generated by IAI-funded programs and projects must be fully described and submitted for inclusion in the Open Data Catalog by the IAI. This Catalog is implemented as a Harvard Dataverse repository.

Database of scientific articles

The Database of scientific articles generated by IAI sponsored projects and activities which hosts a unique collection of transdisciplinary research in the Americas. The IAI Directorate compiles publications generated as a result of its projects and activities.

The Database provides access to this literature with links to the full-text of the article when published under open access licenses. Articles are available in the language of publication, namely, English, Portuguese and Spanish. The Database is indexed by author, title or keywords, project number and year. Each database record also includes the article’s DOI, or Digital Object Identifier, an alpha-numeric string used to identify permanently an article or document and link to it on the web.

Please note that the Database is a work in progress and corrections and updates to the data are ongoing. This new bibliographical resource will contribute to the corpus of scientific literature in the Americas, offer researchers insight into the invaluable work achieved by the IAI scientific community and promote transdisciplinary science and activities. It also promotes and contributes to the IAI’s efforts on open data and open science.
