SBSTA-30: document on biofuels and carbon balance

At SBSTA-30, in June 2009, the IAI document MISC.5 FCCC/SBSTA/2009/, summarized the successful progress of its IDRC funded network on “Land-use change, biofuels and rural development in the La Plata Basin” and included a discussion paperon critical issues and trade-offs between the use of biofuel and sustainable land use. The IAI invited member countries to support activities combining ecosystem and atmospheric carbon cycle research to guide decision making and reinforced its goal to involve member countries more closely in IAI-UNFCCC interactions. This initiative responded directly to the five-year Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change (NWP), providing cooperation among Parties, relevant organizations and stakeholders and encouraging South-South cooperation to exchange lessons learnt from regional experiences.
