Science Diplomacy and Global Environmental Change in Latin America and the Caribbean

This publication is the result of a collaboration between the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Center for Studies in International Negotiations (CAENI) at the University of São Paulo, and a training material of the IAI's Science Diplomacy Center. The book brings together 17 pioneering case studies that illustrate how science diplomacy can address urgent socio-environmental challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The editorial coordination was led by Marcella Ohira, Director of the Science Diplomacy Center. The research team is based at the University of São Paulo and includes Amâncio Jorge de Oliveira, Janina Onuki, Gabriela Ferreira, Rodrigo Lyra, Romeu Bonk, André Bafti, and Flávia Loss.

The book covers fundamental concepts of science diplomacy and innovation and identifies the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to each case study. The cases illustrate how science is applied in international negotiations, environmental cooperation, public health, indigenous governance, space technology, among others. Examples include cross-border work such as the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR), the Amazon Indigenous Platform (ARPIP), cooperation on health and climate change in the Andes, and the case of the lithium industry in South America.

This book is unique in its approach because it focuses on the challenges and opportunities of science diplomacy in and from Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, it addresses a wide variety of cases, from diplomatic conflicts to far-reaching collaborative initiatives. Finally, it has broad applicability; each study offers public policy recommendations, making it of great interest and utility to decision-makers, researchers, and diplomats.

In short, “Science Diplomacy and Global Environmental Change in Latin America and the Caribbean: Case Studies” is an essential tool for professionals seeking to build bridges between scientific knowledge and decision-making.

The free, self-paced, certificate course “Scientific Diplomacy and Global Environmental Change in the Americas,” which uses and explains the contents of this book, is available in English and Spanish on the IAI Virtual Campus.
