Experts in scientific diplomacy gather for the webinar "Scientific Diplomacy as an Instrument of Governance in Latin America: The Case of Estuaries and Mangroves", a virtual event that will explore how scientific diplomacy can act as a bridge between the international scientific community and public policy-making processes in Latin America.

The event will feature the participation of prominent panelists:

  • Juan Carlos Navarro, Panama's Minister of Environment, will address the integration of science into environmental public policies.
  • Franklin Morales, Head of International Technical Cooperation of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt)
  • Luisa Echeverría King, Director General of Diplocientifica and Director of Diplomacy and International Scientific Cooperation at Simón Bolívar University, Colombia, will present the impact of scientific diplomacy in general and documents such as policy briefs and whitepapers in particular on decision-making.
  • Marcella Ohira, Deputy Executive Director of the IAI, will highlight the results and impacts of the scientific diplomacy workshop that the IAI organized in June 2024 in collaboration with SENACYT and COIBA.

The moderation will be in charge of Ulsía Urrea Mariño, a researcher at the University of Texas A&M (USA) and Coordinator of the international relations committee of DiploCientifica, and Omar López Alfano, Science Director of the IAI, who will lead the discussion with the panelists.

This webinar, organized in collaboration with COIBA AIP and DiploCientifica, will be a space to reflect on the opportunities offered by scientific diplomacy in environmental governance and its contribution to the protection of key ecosystems such as estuaries and mangroves.
