Droughts pose a critical challenge for Latin America, especially in the agricultural, energy, and river transport sectors. In light of growing climate uncertainty, the IAI's Center for Scientific Diplomacy (SDC) organized a workshop with the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the National Council for Science and Technology of Paraguay (CONACYT), the Center for Research on Global Change (CICAG), the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FACEN) of the National University of Asunción, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) – Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, to discuss and learn about existing international cooperation mechanisms for coordinating key actors and generating responses based on scientific evidence. The workshop was held on May 26 and 27, 2025, at the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FACEN), National University of Asunción, Paraguay.
As a result of the workshop, the Declaration of Asunción by the Parties and Institutions Associated with the IAI on Water Security, Biodiversity, and Climate Resilience in the Americas was issued, conveying the region’s commitment to transnational cooperation, access to climate information, and the implementation of sustainable risk management mechanisms. The text of the declaration is available in Spanish and English.
