Meeting of the IPBES Expert Group on Policy Support Tools and Methodologies

The IAI Directorate collaborates with the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) to support research, capacity-building and the provision of scientific information and analyses needed by decision-makers to deliver more effective policies on biodiversity and global change.

In this regard, the IAI Directorate is part of the IPBES Expert Group on Policy Support Tools and Methodologies. This Group is tasked by the IPBES Plenary to provide policy support tools and policy instruments linked to assessments, case studies, learning opportunities, and communities of practice through its Catalogue (https://www.ipbes.net/policy-support).

IPBES has the mandate to support policy formulation and implementation for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystems. The Policy Support Portal provides access to the resources needed to support this mandate. Institutions and governance have a central role influencing all aspects of the human relationships with nature. In the pursuit of better-informed and evidence-based policies, this is reflected in IPBES conceptual framework.

The use of the Portal could provide the opportunity for individuals and institutions to gain access to what is currently under development and implementation in their areas of interest and also provide access to resources that are based on new tools and approaches. These innovative resources may offer the information needed to assist and inform decision makers and so assist in formulating policies that better address the direct and indirect drivers affecting biodiversity.

The Meeting of the IPBES Expert Group on Policy Support Tools and Methodologies was held from 7 to 9 August 2018 in Cambridge, UK.
