Translating advances in ENSO research to operations in Latin America and the Caribbean

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), and the University of Colorado Boulder aim to strengthen regional resilience to climate variability. To this end, they have organized regional seminars focused on improving the connection between recent scientific advances and their application in meteorological and climate operations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The first seminar, “Translating advances in ENSO research to operations in Latin America and the Caribbean”, took place on 3 July 2025.

The main objectives were to:

  • Analyze the operational implications of asymmetry in ENSO predictability.
  • Exchange experiences among WMO Regional Climate Centers.
  • Strengthen collaboration between scientific and operational communities in the region.

The target audience was scientists, operational forecasters, and technical staff from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) and Regional Climate Centers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Panelists included: Anna Stewart (IAI), Julian Baez (WMO), Pedro DiNezio (University of Colorado Boulder, USA), Cristian Martinez-Villalobos (Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, Chile), Michelle L'heureux (NOAA Climate Prediction Center), Marisol Osman (Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina), Cedric Van Meerbeeck (CIMH), Felipe Costa (CIIFEN), Laura Aldeco (SIISA). Cédric Van Meerbeeck (WMO Regional Climate Center for the Caribbean, CIMH), Felipe Costa (WMO Regional Climate Center for Western South America, CIIFEN) and Laura Aldeco (WMO Regional Climate Center for Southern South America, SIISA).
