The IAI, in over 20 years of funding collaborative research throughout the Americas, has generated many networks led by principal investigators. On 22-24 August 2016 the Instituto Argentino de Oceanografía, on behalf of the IAI, invited 12 students and young professionals to Bahia Blanca, Argentina, to initiate a network of young researchers.
This initial group of young scientists came from several collaborative research networks working on water related topics. Holm Tiessen (IAI Executive Director), Ana Murgida (IAI Science-Policy Liaison Director), Kathleen Weathers (GLEON chair), Cayelan Carey, Kevin Rose and and Facundo Scordo (former GLEON Graduate Student Association chairs) and Gerardo Perillo (PI of SAFER) shared their experience in leading interdisciplinary work, and integrating students into international science efforts.
After this introduction, the group of young professionals worked on the objectives, organization and plans for first activities towards the creation of the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral (GSP) Association of the IAI. Volunteers from each of the IAI projects present make up the first leadership team of the GSP:
– M.Cecilia Filipello (CRN 3094, ANTARES)
– Ignacio Gianelli (CRN 3017, VOCES)
– Martín Kazimierski (CRN 3102)
– Carina Seitz (CRN 3038, SAFER)
The mission of this IAI GSP is to achieve a collaborative process between young researchers, a training professional development and the improvement of their communication skills. In the near future, a web page, forum, mail addresses and plan of activities for the coming months will be published. If the initiative is successful, the group will invite young scientists from the entire IAI program to join.
